ASHBY, RICHARD (1614-1680)

Richard Ashby, jesuita inglés cuyo verdadero apellido era Thimelby, nació en Lincolnshire en 1614 y murió en St. Omer el 7 de enero (o septiembre) de 1680. Era el quinto hijo de Richard Thimelby, de Irnham, Lincolnshire, y de su esposa Mary, hija de Edward Brookesby, nieta de Lord Vaux de Harrowden. Ingresó en la Compañía de Jesús en 1632, profesando los cuatro votos en 1646. Después de haber enseñado filosofía y teología en Lieja durante dieciséis años, fue enviado a la misión inglesa hacia 1648, trabajando principalmente en su condado natal. Fue rector de la casa para novicios en Watten, cerca de St. Omer, desde 1666 hasta 1672, cuando fue nombrado rector de St. Omer College. Fue autor de Purgatory Surveyed, or a particular account of the happy, yet thrice unhappy, state of the souls there; also of the singular charity and ways to relieve them.
