ASHDOWNE, WILLIAM (1723-1810)

William Ashdowne, predicador unitario inglés, nació en Tunbridge Wells en 1723 y murió el 2 de abril de 1810. Su padre, comerciante, fue pastor de General Baptist (o Unitarian) Society, que se reunía en Mount Ephraim. Tras pasar un período de prueba para el ministerio, William Ashdowne se retiró a Dover en 1757, casándose con la hija del reverendo Robert Pyall, pastor de General Baptist Church; a la muerte de Pyall en 1759 ocupó su púlpito sin paga los siguientes veintidós años. En 1781 fue elegido pastor, con el reverendo Stephen Philpott como asociado; y aunque predicó rara vez en sus últimos años, retuvo ese puesto hasta su muerte. Sus publicaciones son: On the True Character of John the Baptist, publicada anónimamente, bajo la firma 'By an Impartial Hand' 1757; The Distinction between the Ordinary and Extraordinary Gifts of the Holy Spirit, anónima con la misma firma; A Dissertation on St. John iii. 5, 1768; A Scripture Key to the Evangelists, 1777; On Baptism, 1784; The Unitarian, Arian, and Trinitarian Opinions Examined, 1789; Satan, 1794; Two Letters to the Bishop of Llandaff, 1798.
