BAILLIE, JOHN (1741-1806)

John Baillie, teólogo inglés, nació en 1741 y murió en Gateshead el 12 de diciembre de 1806. Se convirtió en ministro en 1767 de la casa de reuniones Carliol-Street (United Seccesion) en Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Sus hábitos sociables le llevaron a irregularidades inconsistentes con su profesión, cesando su relación con esa congregación hacia 1783. Luego asistió a William Tinwell, autor de un tratado de aritmética, dirigiendo una escuela. Después enseñó en una sala del cementerio de St. Nicholas en Newcastle y en 1797 sus amigos acomodaron la vieja Postern Chapel para su uso. Estuvo en dificultades pecuniarias varios años antes de su muerte. Publicó varios sermones sueltos, incluyendo A Funeral Discourse on the Death of the Papacy, delivered before a crowded audience, Newcastle, 1798, y A Funeral Sermon occasioned by the death of Frances Baillie, su hija, que mantuvo una escuela en Newcastle y murió con veintitrés años en 1801.
