BATMAN, STEPHEN († 1584)

Stephen Batman, traductor y autor inglés, nació en Bruton, Somersetshire, y murió en 1584. Después de una previa educación en la escuela de su ciudad natal fue a Cambridge, donde tuvo la reputation de ser un hombre culto y un predicador excelente. Se supone que era el Bateman que en 1534 se licenció en derecho, siendo en ese momento sacerdote y estudiante de seis años de estancia. Posteriormente el arzobispo Parker le seleccionó como uno de sus capellanes domésticos y lo empleó en la colección de la biblioteca ahora depositada en Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Batman afirma que recogió 6.700 libros para el arzobispo, aunque se trata probablemente de una exageración. En 1573 era rector de Merstham en Surrey. También fue doctor en teología y párroco de Newington Butts en el mismo condado. En 1582 fue uno de los capellanes domésticos de Henry Carey, Lord Hunsdon. Residió algún tiempo en Leeds, Kent.
