BAYLEY, ROBERT S. († 1859)

Robert S. Bayley, ministro independiente, murió el 14 de noviembre de 1859. Fue educado en Highbury Theological College y al salir de esa institución fue nombrado para pastorear una iglesia en Louth, Lincolnshire. Después de algunos años de labor en ese lugar se trasladó (1835) a Sheffield para hacerse cargo de la congregación de Howard Street, donde permaneció cerca de diez años. Mientras estuvo allí se esforzó activamente en el establecimiento de un centro de enseñanza llamado People College, donde tenía la costumbre de dar clases sobre una variedad de temas. Allí también en 1846 comenzó un periódico mensual llamado People's College Journal. Fue impreso en el colegio, con el propósito de promover el interés en la educación popular. Acabó en un final prematuro en mayo del año siguiente. La siguiente escena de las labores de Bayley fue Ratcliff Highway, Londres, de donde se trasladó hacia 1857 a Hereford, donde permaneció hasta su muerte por apoplejía.

Fue autor de: A History of Louth; Nature considered as a Revelation, in two parts: part i. being an argument to prove that nature ought to be regarded as a revelation; part ii. furnishing specimens of the manner in which the material revelation may be explained, 1836; una pequeña obra sin pretensiones científicas o filosóficas; Lectures on the Early History of the Christian Church; A new Concordance to the Hebrew Bible juxta editionem Hooghtianam, and accommodated to the English version, el volumen 1 con una dedicatoria al obispo de Lincoln; Two Lectures on the Educational Question delivered in the Town Hall, Sheffield; A course of Lectures on the Inspiration of the Scriptures, 1852; y otras alocuciones y sermones.
