BEARD, CHARLES (1827-1888)

Charles Beard, unitario inglés, nació en Higher Broughton, Manchester, el 27 de julio de 1827 y murió en Liverpool el 9 de abril de 1888. Era hijo de John Relly Beard, un pastor unitario y educador (1800-1876). Estudió en Manchester New College 1843–48, licenciándose en humanidades en la universidad de Londres en 1847 y continuando sus estudios en Berlín 1848-49; fue ayudante de pastor en Hyde Chapel, Gee Cross, Cheshire, 1850, pastor en 1854 y pastor en Renshaw Street Chapel, Liverpool, 1867. Desde 1864 a 1879 editó The Theological Review. Además de sermones, alocuciones, etc., publicó Port Royal, a Contribution to the History of Religion and Literature in France (2 volúmenes, Londres, 1861); The Reformation in its Relation to Modern Thought (conferencias Hibbert de 1883) y Martin Luther and the Reformation in Germany until the Close of the Diet of Worms (edición de J. F. Smith, 1889).
