BICKERSTETH, EDWARD HENRY (1825-1906)

Edward Henry Bickersteth, obispo de Exeter, nació en Islington, Londres, el 25 de enero de 1825 y murió en Londres el 16 de mayo de 1906.

Era hijo de Edward Bickersteth. Fue educado en Trinity College, Cambridge (licenciatura en humanidades, 1847), siendo ordenado diácono en 1848 y sacerdote al año siguiente. Fue coadjutor de Banningham, Norfolk (1848–51); rector de Hinton Martell, Dorset (1852–55); vicario de Christ Church, Hampstead (1855–85); deán rural de Highgate (1878–85) y deán de Gloucester (1885). Fue consagrado obispo de Exeter en 1885, pero dimitió cinco años más tarde por su edad. Escribió Water from the Well Spring (Londres, 1852); The Rock of Ages (1857); Commentary on the New Testament (1864); Yesterday, To-day, and Forever (poema en 12 libros, 1866; apreciado como una devota revelación de lo alto); The Spirit of Life (1869); Hymnal Companion to the Book of Common Prayer (1870); The Two Brothers and Other Poems (1871); The Reef and Other Parables (1873); The Shadowed Home and the Light Beyond (1874); Words of Counsel to the Clergy and Laity of the Diocese of Exeter (1888); Charge at Third Visitation (1895); From Year to Year (1895); The Feast of Divine Love (1896) y Charge at Fourth Visitation (1898). Fue autor de varios himnos bien conocidos.
