BREWSTER, JOHN (1753-1842)

John Brewster, autor inglés, nació en 1753 y murió en Egglescliffe el 28 de noviembre de 1842. Era hijo del vicario de Heighington en el condado palatino de Durham y recibió su educación en la escuela de Newcastle-upon-Tyne bajo el reverendo Hugh Moises y en Lincoln College, Oxford, donde se graduó en 1775 y obtuvo la maestría en 1778. Fue nombrado coadjutor de Stockton-on-Tees en 1776 y orador en 1777. En 1791 fue presentado a la vicaría de Greatham, beneficio que tuvo hasta 1799, cuando se convirtió en vicario de Stockton por el patrocinio del obispo Barrington. El mismo prelado a partir de entonces lo promovió sucesivamente a las rectorías de Redmarshall en 1805, Boldon en 1809 y Egglescliffe en 1814, cargos en los que, según el testimonio de Surtees (Hist. of Durham, iii. 139), fue 'extensa y justamente respetado por el desempeño ejemplar de sus deberes parroquiales.'

Su obra principal fue Parochial History and Antiquities of Stockton-on-Tees, publicada en cuarto en Stockton en 1796. Una segunda edición ampliada se imprimió en 1829, en octavo.
