BRINSLEY, JOHN, EL VIEJO

John Brinsley el Viejo, teólogo puritano y educador inglés, se formó en Christ College, Cambridge, donde se licenció en 1584 y obtuvo la maestría en 1588. Se convirtió en 'ministro de la Palabra' y estuvo al cargo de la escuela pública en Ashby-de-la-Zouch en Leicestershire. El famoso astrólogo, William Lilly, fue uno de sus alumnos, como él mismo afirma en su curiosa autobiografía. 'El domingo de Trinidad de 1613', dice, 'mi padre me mandó a Ashby-de-la-Zouch para ser instruido por un tal John Brinsley; alguien en esos tiempos de gran capacidad para la instrucción de la juventud en las lenguas latina y griega; era muy severo en su vida y conversación y formó a muchos estudiosos para las universidades. En religión era un puritano estricto, totalmente no conformista con las ceremonias de la Iglesia de Inglaterra.' De nuevo afirma: 'En el decimoctavo año de mi edad [es decir, en 1619 o 1620] mi maestro Brinsley se vio forzado a dejar la escuela, al ser perseguido por los oficiales del obispo; fue a Londres, donde enseñó y murió.' Se casó con una hermana del doctor Joseph Hall, obispo de Norwich.
