BUNNY, FRANCIS (1543-1617)

Francis Bunny, escritor teológico inglés, nació en el Vache el 8 de mayo de 1543 y murió en Ryton, el 16 de abril de 1617. Era el tercer hijo de Richard y hermano de Edmund Bunny. Ingresó en Magdalen College, Oxford, en 1558, fue admitido en 1559 y se graduó el 10 de julio de 1562, obteniendo la maestría el 9 de julio de 1567. Fue miembro a prueba de 1561 a 1572. Tomando las órdenes, comenzó a predicar el 1 de noviembre de 1567. Su predicación fue popular y le consiguió una capellanía del conde de Bedford. El 9 de mayo de 1572 fue propuesto para una prebenda en Durham (instalado el 13 de mayo) y sucedió a Ralph Lever como archidiácono de Northumberland el 20 de octubre de 1573. Renunció a la archidiaconía al convertirse en rector de Ryton, Durham, el 11 de septiembre de 1578 (inducido el 13 de septiembre). Al igual que su hermano Edmund, fue un infatigable predicador y un firme calvinista. Fue enterrado en el presbiterio de su iglesia. Se casó con Jane, hija de Henry Priestley, y tuvo cinco hijos, que murieron todos antes que él.

Bunny publicó: A Survey of the Pope's supremacie... and in it are examined the chief arguments that M. Bellarmine hath, for defence of the said supremacie..., 1590; Truth and Falsehood; or a comparison betweene the truth now taught in England, and the doctrine of the Romish church, &c., with an answere to such reasons as the popish recusants alledge, why they will not come to our churches, 1595; A Comparison between the auncient Fayth of the Romans and the new Romish religion, 1595; An Answere to a Popish libell intituled: A Petition to the Bishops, Preachers, and Gospellers, lately spread abroad in the North parts, Oxford, 1607; Of the Head Corner-stone by builders still overmuch omitted; i.e. a forme of teaching Jesus Christ out of all the holy Scriptures, 1611; An Exposition of the 28 v. of the 3 chap, of the Epistle to the Romans. Wherein is manifestly proved the doctrine of Justification by Faith, and by Faith onely, 1616; A Guide unto Godlinesse; or a plain and familiar Exposition of the Ten Commandments by questions and answers, 1617. Wood menciona también su manuscrito In Joelis prophetiam enarratio, dedicado en 1595 a Tobias Mathew, obispo de Durham, conteniendo la sustancia de sermones predicados hacia 1575 en Berwick.
