BURGESS, HENRY (1808-1886)

Henry Burgess, teólogo inglés, nació en Newington, Londres, el 29 de enero de 1808 y murió el 10 de febrero de 1886. Estudió en Dissenting College, Stepney; tras graduarse (1830) fue durante un tiempo ministro bautista, pero decidió unirse a la Iglesia de Inglaterra en 1849, siendo ordenado diácono en 1850 y sacerdote en 1851 por el doctor Lee, obispo de Manchester; fue coadjutor en Blackburn en 1851; coadjutor perpetuo de Clifton Reynes, Buckinghamshire, 1854; vicario de St. Andrew, Whittlesea, Cambridgeshire, 1861. Sus obras principales fueron traducciones del siríaco de Festal Letters of St. Athanasius (Londres, 1852) y de Select Metrical Hymns and Homilies of Ephraem Syrus, with an introduction and historical and philological notes (1853); The Reformed Church of England in its Principles and their Legitimate Development (1869); Essays, Biblical and Ecclesiastical, relating chiefly to the authority and interpretation of the Holy Scriptures (1873); The Art of Preaching and the Composition of Sermons (1881). Editó The Clerical Journal 1854–68, The Journal of Sacred Literature 1854–62, y la segunda edición de la obra de Kitto, Cyclopædia of Biblical Literature (2 volúmenes, Edimburgo, 1856).
