CUNNINGHAM, JOHN (1819-1893)

John Cunningham nació en Paisley, Renfrewshire, Inglaterra, el 9 de mayo de 1819 y murió en St. Andrews el 1 de septiembre de 1893. Estudió en Glasgow (1836-40) y Edimburgo (1840-45), siendo ordenado en 1845 para el ministerio en Crieff, Perthshire y en 1886 fue nombrado rector de St. Mary College, St. Andrews. Fue uno de los primeros presbiterianos escoceses en introducir música instrumental en su iglesia y también manifestó sus ideas amplias en otras formas. En 1886 fue escogido moderador de la Asamblea General de la Iglesia de Escocia. Escribió The Church History of Scotland from the Commencement of the Christian Era to the Present Century (2 volúmenes, Edimburgo, 1859); The Quakers from their Origin till the Present Time (Londres, 1868); A New Theory of Knowing and Being Known, with Some Speculations on the Border-Land of Psychology and Physiology (Edimburgo, 1874); Episcopacy, Presbytery, and Puritanism in Scotland, 1672 to 1660 A.D., (conferencias St. Giles; 1881 y The Growth of the Church in its Organization and Institutions (conferencias Croall; Londres, 1886).
