ELLICOTT, CHARLES JOHN (1819-1905)

Charles John Ellicott nació en Whitwell, Rutlandshire, Inglaterra, el 25 de abril de 1819 y murió en Birchington-on-Sea, Kent, el 15 de octubre de 1905.

Estudió en St. John College, Cambridge (licenciatura en humanidades, 1841), donde fue miembro del consejo rector, 1845-48, siendo ordenado diácono en 1845 y sacerdote anglicano en 1846. Desde 1848 a 1861 fue profesor de teología en King College, Londres, y también rector de Pilton, Rutlandshire, hasta 1858. En 1860 fue nombrado profesor Hulsean de teología en Cambridge, pero al año siguiente dimitió de ambos profesorados al ser nombrado deán de Exeter. En 1863 fue consagrado obispo de Gloucester y Bristol y en la partición de la sede en 1897 fue obispo de Gloucester, dimitiendo en 1904. Fue conferenciante Hulsean en Cambridge en 1858, miembro de la comisión real sobre el ritual y las rúbricas en 1867 y presidente del comité de revisión británico del Nuevo Testamento en 1870-81. (Bristol, 1885); I Corinthians, with a Critical Commentary (Londres, 1887); Spiritual Needs in Country Parishes (1888); Christus Comprobator (1891); Sacred Study (2 volúmenes, 1892-94); Our Reformed Church and its Present Troubles (1897); The Revised Version of Holy Scripture (1901) y Sermons at Gloucester (1905). También editó A New Testament Commentary for English Readers (3 volúmenes, Londres, 1877-82) y An Old Testament Commentary for English Readers (6 volúmenes, 1882-84).
