ELLIS, GEORGE EDWARD (1814-1894)

George Edward Ellis, clérigo, editor y autor americano, nació en Boston, Massachusetts, el 8 de agosto de 1814 y murió allí el 20 de diciembre de 1894.

Se graduó en Harvard College en 1833 y en Harvard Divinity School en 1836. Luego empleó cuatro años en viajar y estudiar en Europa, siendo ordenado al ministerio unitario en 1840 y ejerciendo como pastor de Harvard Unitarian Society, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1840-69. Desde 1857 a 1863 fue profesor de teología sistemática en Harvard Divinity School. Durante varios años fue editor de Christian Register y posteriormente de The Christian Examiner. Escribió A Half-Century of the Unitarian Controversy, with Particular Reference to its Origin, its Course, and its Prominent Subjects among the Congregationalists of Massachusetts (Boston, 1857); Aims and Purposes of the Founders of Massachusetts, and their Treatment of Intruders and Dissentients (1869); Introduction to the History of the First Church in Boston, 1650-1880 (1882); The Red Man and the White Man in North America (1882) y The Puritan Age and Rule in the Colony of Massachusetts Bay (1888). Harvard University le otorgó el doctorado en teología en 1857 y el de derecho en 1883, siendo la cuarta pesona en recibir ambos honores de su alma mater.
