GLOAG, PATON JAMES (1823-1906)

Paton James Gloag, presbiteriano escocés, nació en Perth, Escocia, el 17 de mayo de 1823 y murió en Edimburgo el 9 de enero de 1906.

Estudió en Edimburgo (1840-43) y St. Andrews (1843-44), desempeñando tareas pastorales en Dunning, Perthshire (1848-60), Blantyre, Lanarkshire (1860-1870) y Galashiels, Selkirkshire 81870-90). Fue conferenciante Baird en 1869 y moderador de la asamblea general de la Iglesia de Escocia en 1889, mientras que tras su retiro del ministerio activo en 1890 fue profesor temporal de crítica bíblica en la universidad de Aberdeen, 1896-99. Escribió The Assurance of Salvation (Edimburgo, 1853); Justificatian by Faith (1856); The Primeval World, or, the Relation of Geology to Revelation (1859); The Resurrection (Londres, 1862); Practical Christianity (Glasgow, 1866); Commentary on Acts (2 volúmenes, Edimburgo, 1870); Introduction to the Pauline Epistles (1876); The Messianic Prophecies (conferencias Baird de 1869 y 1879); Life of Paul (1881); Commentary on James (1884); Exegetical Studies (1884); Introduction to the Catholic Epistles (1886); Commentary on the Epistles to the Thessalonians (Londres, 1887); Introduction to the Johannine Writings (1891); Subjects and Mode of Baptism (Paisley, 1891); The Life of St. John (Londres, 1893); Introduction to the Synoptic Gospels (Edimburgo, 1895) y Evening Thoughts (1900). Igualmente tradujo diversos comentarios alemanes sobre varios libros del Nuevo Testamento.
