GOODWIN, CHARLES WYCLIFFE (1817-1878)

Charles Wycliffe Goodwin nació en King's Lynn, Norfolk, en 1817 y murió en Shangai el 17 de enero de 1878.

Estudió en St. Catherine's Hall, Cambridge (licenciatura en humanidades, 1838; máster en humanidades, 1842), siendo admitido al bufete en Linconln's Inn en 1848. Fue el único colaborador laico para Essays and Reviews. En 1865 fue nombrado juez ayudante del tribunal supremo para China y Japón. En 1873 fue trasladado a Yokohama como juez del tribunal supremo, posición que retuvo cuando regresó a Shangai en 1878. Sus obras incluyen: The Anglo-Saxon Version of the Life of St. Guthlac... with a translation and Notes (Londres, 1848); The Anglo-Saxon Legends of St. Andrew and St. Veronica... with an English Translation (Cambridge, 1851); Hieratic Papyri (en Cambridge Essays, Londres, 1858); On the Mosaic Cosmogony (en Essays and Reviews, 1860); The Story of Sancha, an Egyptian Tale of Four thousand years ago, Translated from the Hieratic Text (1866), que con otras traducciones por Goodwin, se incluyó en la primera serie de Records of the Past (12 volúmenes, 1873-81); también varias contribuciones a la segunda serie de la obra de Chabas Mélanges égyptologiques (Chalon-sur-Saône, 1864) y la de Lipsius y Brugsch Zeitschrift für ägyptische Sprache.
