HARDWICK, CHARLES (1821-1859)

Charles Hardwick nació en Slingsby, Yorkshire, Inglaterra, el 22 de septiembre de 1821 y murió cerca de Bagnères-de-Luchon, Francia, el 18 de agosto de 1859. Estudió en St. John College y Catherine Hall, Cambridge, recibiendo un título en Catherine Hall en 1845. En 1859 fue elegido predicador en Cambridge y en marzo de 1851 era predicador en Chapel Royal, Whitehall. Desde marzo a septiembre de 1853 fue profesor de teología en Queen College, Birmingham. En 1855 fue nombrado profesor de teología en King College, Cambridge, y abogado cristiano en la universidad. Fue elegido miembro del recién creado consejo del senado en 1856 y reelegido en 1858. Fue archidiácono de Ely en 1859, poco antes de morir por una caída en los Pririneos. Editó varios libros para Cambridge University Press y Percy Society, escribiendo varias obras valiosas, como: A History of the Articles of Religion (Cambridge, 1851; 2ª edición, reescrita en gran parte, 1859); A History of the Christian Church, Middle Age (Cambridge, 1853; 3ª edición por W. Stubbs, 1872); A History of the Christian Church during the Reformation (1856) y el inacabado tratado Christ and Other Masters: an Historical Inquiry into some of the Chief Parallelisms and Contrasts between Christianity and the Religious Systems of the Ancient World (4 partes, Cambridge, 1855-59; 2ª edición, con Memoir por F. Procter, 2 volúmenes, Londres, 1863).
