HARDY, ROBERT SPENCE (1803-1868)

Robert Spence Hardy nació en Preston, Lancashire, Inglaterra, el 1 de julio de 1803 y murió en Headingly, Yorkshire, el 16 de abril de 1868.

Fue admitido a la British Conference en 1825 y posteriormente designado misionero para Ceilán. Tras un fiel servicio de 23 años en ese campo regresó a Inglaterra, sirviendo en varios circuitos metodistas importantes. Fue un hombre de amplia cultura y autor de varias obras autoritativas sobre budismo y literatura pali en Ceilán, como: The British Government and the Idolatry of Ceylon (Londres, 1841); Eastern Monachism: an Account of the Origin, Laws, Discipline, Sacred Writings... and Present Circumstances of the Order of Mendicants, founded by Gótama Buddha (1850); A Manual of Buddhism in its Modern Development, translated from Singhalese MSS. (1853) y The Legends and Theories of the Buddhists compared with History and Science (1866).
