HOVEY, ALVAH (1820-1903)

Alvah Hovey nació en Greene, Nueva York, el 5 de marzo de 1820 y murió en Newton Centre, Massachusetts, el 6 de septiembre de 1903. Fue educado en Dartmouth College (licenciatura en humanidades, 1844) y tras ser principal de New London Academy, New Hampshire, (1844-45) entró en Newton Theological Institution, donde se graduó en 1848. Luego predicó durante un año en New Gloucester, Maine, y en 1849 regresó a Newton Theological Institution, donde fue bibliotecario e instructor en hebreo (1849-55) y profesor de historia de la Iglesia (1853-55). En 1855 fue nombrado profesor de teología y ética cristiana, posición que retuvo hasta 1900, cuando se retiró de la vida activa. Desde 1868 a 1900 fue también presidente de Newton Theological Seminary. Además de traducir la obra de F. M. Perthes, Life of St. Chrysostom (en colaboración con D. B. Ford; Boston, 1854) y editar The Complete Commentary on the New Testament (7 volúmenes, Filadelfia, 1881-90), al que él mismo contribuyó con los volúmenes sobre Juan (1885) y Gálatas (1890), escribió The Life of Rev. Isaac Backus (Boston, 1858); The State of the Impenitent Dead (1859); The Miracles of Christ as Attested by the Evangelists (1864); The Scriptural Law of Divorce (Filadelfia, 1866); God with Us; or, The Person and Work of Christ (Boston, 1872); Normal Class Manual (en colaboración con J. M. Gregory; Filadelfia, 1873); Religion and the State (Boston, 1874); The Doctrine of the Higher Christian Life Compared with the Teachings of the Holy Scriptures (1876); Manual of Systematic Theology and Christian Ethics (1877); Biblical Eschatology (Filadelfia, 1888); Studies in Ethics and Religion (Boston, 1892); Christian Teaching and Life (Filadelfia, 1895) y Barnas Sears, a Christian Educator (Boston, 1903).
