Abner Kneeland nació en Gardner, Massachusetts, el 6 de abril de 1774 y murió en Farmington, Iowa, el 27 de agosto de 1844.
Abner KneelandPrimero fue ministro bautista, luego universalista y finalmente se hizo deísta. Tras editar periódicos universalistas en Filadelfia y Nueva York fue a Boston y fundó allí en 1831 el Investigator. Por ideas expresadas en este periódico fue juzgado por blasfemia ante el Tribunal Supremo en Boston en 1836 y sentenciado a encarcelamiento durante un corto tiempo. Sus obras incluyen The New Testament in Greek and English (2 volúmenes, Filadelfia, 1822); Lectures on the Doctrine of Universal Salvation (1824) y A Review of the Evidences of Christianity (Nueva York, 1829).
