LEGGE, JAMES (1815-1897)

James Legge nació en Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Escocia, el 20 de diciembre de 1815 y murió en Oxford el 29 de noviembre de 1897.

Estudió en King Colloge, Aberdeen (máster en humanidades, 1835) y en Highbury Theological College, Londres, y desde 1839 a 1842 fue misionero con la London Missionary Society en Malaca, donde fue designado rector del colegio anglo-chino en 1840. Desde 1843 a 1873 fue pastor de la Union Church en Hongkong y director del seminario teológico de la London Missionary Society en ese lugar, sucesor del colegio anglo-chino de Malaca. En 1873 regresó permanentemente a Gran Bretaña. Desde 1876 fue profesor de chino en Oxford. Fue autor de muchas obras en chino y también publicó o tradujo The Notions of the Chinese Concerning God and Spirits (Hongkong, 1852); Chinese Classics (5 volúmenes, 1861-72); Life and Teachings of Confucius (Londres, 1867); The Life and Teaching of Mencius (1875); The Book of Ancient Chinese Poetry in English Verse (1876); The Texts of Confucianism (1 volúmenes, Oxford, 1879-82); The Religions of China: Confucianism and Taoism described and compared with Christianity (Londres, 1880); The Texts of Taoism (2 volúmenes, Oxford, 1886); Record of Buddhistic Kingdoms: Travels of the Buddhist Pilgrim Fa-hsien in India, (Londres, 1886) y The Nestorian Monument of Hsi-an Fû in Shen-Hsî, China, relating to the Diffusion of Christianity in China in the Seventh and Eighth Centuries (1888).
