MANT, RICHARD (1776-1848)

Richard Mant, Iglesia de Irlanda, nació en Southampton el 12 de febrero de 1776 y murió en Ballymoney, a 19 kilómetros al nordeste de Belfast, el 2 de noviembre de 1848.

Fue educado en Winchester y Trinity College, Oxford (licenciatura en humanidades, 1797; máster en humanidades, 1801). Ordenado diácono en 1802 y sacerdote en 1803, fue coadjutor de Buriton, Hampshire (1804-08); Crawley, Hampshire (1808-09) y Southampton (1809-10); vicario de Great Coggeshall, Essex (1810-13) y rector de St. Botolph, Londres (1815-20) y East Horsley, Surrey (1818-20). Fue conferenciante Bampton en 1811 y capellán doméstico del arzobispo de Canterbury desde 1813 a 1815. En abril de 1820 fue consagrado obispo de Killaloe y Kilfenora y en marzo de 1823 fue trasladado a Down y Connor, añadiéndose Dromore en 1842. Mant fue un voluminoso escritor, tanto en prosa como en verso; de sus obras las más importantes son: Sermons for Parochial and Domestic Use (3 volúmenes, Oxford, 1813); su Biblia anotada, en colaboración con George D'Oyly (3 volúmenes, Oxford, 1814); Sermons Preached before the University of Oxford (1816); The Book of Psalms in a Metrical Version (1824); The Gospel Miracles, in a Series of Poetical Sketches (Londres, 1832); The British Months, a Poem (1SS5); Ancient Hymns from the Roman Breviary (1837) y History of the Church of Ireland, from the Reformation (2 volúmenes, 1840). De los numerosos himnos de Mant se pueden mencionar: "For all thy saints, O God" y "Come, Holy Ghost, my soul inspire!".
