MILMAN, HENRY HART (1791-1868)

Henry Hart Milman, historiador eclesiástico y poeta inglés, nació en Londres el 10 de febrero de 1791 y murió en Sunninghill, a 22 kilómetros al sudeste de Reading, el 24 de septiembre de 1868.

Era hijo de Sir Francis Milman, médico de Jorge III; fue educado en Oxford (licenciatura en humanidades, 1814; máster en humanidades, 1816; graduado y doctor en teología, 1849), recibiendo el galardón Newdigate de poesía por The Belvidere Apollo (1812), siendo miembro del consejo rector de Brasenose College (1815). Fue ordenado sacerdote (1816); vicario de St. Mary, Reading (1818-35); rector de St. Margaret, Westminster, y canónigo de Westminster (1835-49); deán de San Pablo, Londres (1849). Fue también profesor de poesía en Oxford (1821-31) y conferenciante Hampton en 1827. En teología fue liberal, defendiendo la abolición de la suscripción de los Treinta y Nueve Artículos, y en sus escritos históricos de alguna manera se adelantó a su tiempo. Sus labores literarias se dividen en cuatro categorías:

(2) Traducciones: Nala and Damayanti, and Other Poems, Translated from the Sanscrit into English Verse (Oxford, 1835); The Agamemnon of Æachylus and the Bacchanals of Euripides, with Passages from the Lyric and Later Poets of Greece (Londres, 1865).

Milman contribuyó también a la himnodia; de los trece himnos escritos por él los dos más populares son "When our heads are bowed with woe" y "Ride on, ride on in majesty." Su Poetical Works se recopilaron en tres volúmenes (1839) y una edición completa de Historical Works en quince (1866-67).
