MONSELL, JOHN SAMUEL BEWLEY (1811-1875)

John Samuel Bewley Monsell, compositor de himnos inglés, nació en St. Columb (a 2 kilómetros al nordesde de Londonderry, Irlanda, el 2 de marzo de 1811 y murió en Guildford, Surrey, Inglaterra, el 9 de abril de 1875.

Se graduó en Trinity College, Dublín (licenciatura en humanidades, 1832; bachiller en derecho y doctor en derecho, 1856); fue ordenado diácono en 1834 y sacerdote en 1835; fue sucesivamente capellán del obispo Mant, canciller de la diócesis de Connor, y rector de Ramoan; fue vicario de Egham, Surrey, 1853, y deán rural; luego rector de St. Nicholas, Guildford, 1870. Sus versos se han usado grandemente en colecciones himnológicas. Fue autor de Hymns and Miacellaneoua Poems (Dublín, 1837); Parish Musings, in Verse (Londres, 1850); Verses Addressed to the Cross (1854); His Presence, not his Memory (1855); Spiritual Songs for Sundays and Holidays throughout the Year (1857); The Beatitudes of Sermons (1861); Hymns of Love and Praise for the Churches Year (1863); The Passing Bell and Other Poems (1866); Our New Vicar, or Plain Wards on Ritual and Parish Work (1867); Lights and Shadows (1868); Teachings of the Epiphany (1871); Watches by the Cross (1874); Simon the Cyrenian, and Other Poems (1876). También editó The Parish Hymnal (1873). Entre sus himnos individuales están "Earth below is teeming" y "Holy offerings rich and rare."
