MORTON, NATHANIEL (1612-1685)

Nathaniel Morton, historiador colonial, nació en Leiden, Holanda, en 1612 y murió en Plymouth, Massachusetts, el 28 de junio de 1685. Fue a América en 1623, siendo ayudante del gobernador Bradford en Plymouth en la administración de los asuntos públicos y en 1645 fue designado secretario de la colonia. Estaba bien versado y anotó cuidadosamente los hechos de los primeros días de la colonia; casi todos sus registros fueron escritos por él. Escribió el valioso New-England's Memoriali: or a Brief Relation of the most Memorable and Remarkable Passages of the Providence of God, Manifested to the Planters of New-England in America: with Special Reference to the First Colony thereof, Called New-Plymouth, as also a Nomination of Divers of the most Eminent Instruments Deceased, both of Church and Commonwealth, Improved in the First Beginning and Afterprogress of Sundry of the Respective Jurisdictions in those Parts; in Reference unto Sundry Exemplary Passages of their Lives, and the Time of their Death. Published for the Use and Benefit of Present and Future Generations (Cambridge, 1669). También escribió en 1680 Synopsis of the Church History of Plymouth, que apareció en la obra de Ebenezer Hazard, Historical Collections y en la de Alexander Young, Chronicles of the Pilgrim Settlers of Massachusetts (2 volúmenes, Boston, 1841-46).
