OXENDEN, ASHTON (1808-1892)

Ashton Oxenden, obispo anglicano, nació en Broome Park, Canterbury, el 20 de septiembre de 1808 y murió en Biarritz, a 160 kilómetros al sudoeste de Burdeos, Francia, el 22 de febrero de 1892.

Estudió en University College, Oxford (licenciatura en humanidades, 1831; máster en humanidades, 1859); fue ordenado diácono en 1833 y sacerdote en 1834; fue coadjutor de Barham, Kent, 1833-38; desde 1838 a 1845 se retiró de la obra activa a causa de su mala salud. Fue rector de Pluckley, Kent, 1849-69; fue nombrado canónigo honorario de la catedral de Canterbury, 1864; obispo de Montreal y metropolitano de Canadá, 1869-78; vicario de San Esteban, cerca de Canterbury, 1879-84 y deán rural de Canterbury, 1879-84. Fue el autor de The Cottage Library: (1) Baptism, (2) The Lord's Supper, (3) His. of the Christian Church, (4) Fervent Prayer, (6) God's Message to the Poor, (7) Story of Ruth (6 volúmenes, Londres, 1847-62); Cottage Sermons or Plain Words to the Poor (2 series, 1853-64); The Pathway of Safety; or, Counsel to the Awakened (1856); Cottage Readings. The Barham Tracts Compile (1869); Sermons on the Christian Life (1862); Portraits from the Bible (2 volúmenes, 1863); The Parables of our Lord Explained (1864; Our Church and her Services (1866); A Simple Exposition of the Psalms (2 volúmenes, 1872-73); The Earnest Churchman (1878); Short Comments on the Gospels (1885); The History of My Life: an Autobiography (1891) y Plain Sermons, With a Memoir and Portrait of the Author (Londres y Nueva York, 1893).
