SCOLOKER, ANTHONY

Anthony Scoloker, impresor y traductor inglés, tuvo que exiliarse de Inglaterra por sus ideas evangélicas durante los últimos años del reinado de Enrique VIII. Parece que vivió en Alemania, aprendió el alemán, holandés y francés. A la ascensión de Eduardo VI regresó a Inglaterra, estableciendo una imprenta en 'Savoy Rents without Temple Bar.' Durante algún tiempo William Seres fue su socio y juntos publicaron en 1548 la obra de Bale, Briefe Chronycle of Sir John Oldencastell. Entre otros libros publicados por Scoloker hay ediciones de los poemas de Skelton y Exhortation de Piers Plowman; aunque sus libros son raramente fechados, se puede decir que todos fueron publicados en 1547 o 1548. En ese último año se trasladó a Ipswich, donde vivió en la parroquia de San Nicolás y estableció una imprenta. Scoloker fue también traductor, siendo la más interesante de sus traducciones A goodly Dysputation betwene a Christen Shomaker and a Popyshe Parson... translated out of ye German [of Hans Sachs} by A. Scoloker (1548). La traducción no es muy segura, pero es 'briosa e incluso brillante con humor.' Sus otras obras son: The inst reckenyng, or accompt of the whole number of the yeares fron the beginyng of the worlde unto this presente yere of 1547. A certaine and sure declaracion the the worlde is at an ende.
