SCRIVENER, FREDERICK HENRY AMBROSE (1813-1891)

Frederick Henry Ambrose Scrivener, erudito del Nuevo Testamento, nació en Bermondsey, Londres, el 19 de septiembre de 1813 y murió en Hendon, Middlesex, el 30 de octubre de 1891.

Fue educado en Trinity College, Cambridge (licenciatura en humanidades, 1835; máster en humanidades, 1838); fue ayudante de King's School, Sherborne, 1836; coadjutor de Sandford Orcas, Somerset, 1838-1845; director de Falmouth School, 1846-56; coadjutor vitalicio de Penwerris, Cornwall, 1846-61; rector de St. Gerrans, Cornwall, 1861; prebendario de Exeter, 1874 y vicario de Hendon, 1876. Fue miembro del comité para la revisión del Nuevo Testamento, 1872-80, recibiendo una pensión anual de cien libras, en 1872, en reconocimiento a sus eminentes servicios bíblicos.

Fue autor de: A Supplement to the Authorized English Version of the New Testament (Londres, 1845); Collation of Twenty Greek Manuscripts of the Holy Gospel (Cambridge, 1853); Codex Augiensis,... (and) Fifty other Manuscripts, Gk. and Lat. (1859); Novum Testamentum Textus Stephanici (1860); Plain Introduction to the Criticism of the New Testament (1861); Collation of the Codex Sinaiticus (1863); Bezæ Codex Cantabrigiensis., griego y latino (1864); Six Popular Lectures on the Text of the New Testament (1875) y editó The Cambridge Paragraph Bible (1870-73), apareciendo la introducción en una edición separada revisada (1884). También editó The New Testament in the Original Greek, according to the Text Followed in the Authorized Version together with the Variations Adopted in the Revised Version (1881). Scrivener mantuvo firmemente el texto tradicional del Nuevo Testamento, negándose a aceptar las teorías de la crítica moderna en cuanto al comparativo atraso del textus receptus.
