SCUDAMORE, WILLIAM EDWARD (1813-1881)

William Edward Scudamore, teólogo inglés, nació en Wyre, el 24 de julio de 1813 y murió en Ditchingham, Norfolk, el 31 de enero de 1881. Fue educado en St. John College, Cambridge (licenciatura en humanidades, 1835), siendo miembro del consejo rector en 1837. Tras enseñar durante un tiempo, fue nombrado, en 1839, rector de Ditchingham, parroquia en la que estuvo hasta su muerte. Teológicamente fue un distinguido partidario de la Alta Iglesia, aunque no del tipo más avanzado. Admirable erudito patrístico y litúrgico, fue autor de: The Communion of the Laity (Londres, 1855); Litanies for Use at the various Season of the Christian Year, before and after the Holy Communion, and on other Occasions (1860); The North Side of the Table: An historical Enquiry (1870) y Notitia Eucharistia (1872; una obra maestra en su campo). En el terreno de la polémica y la historia eclesiástica escribió: Letters to a Seceder from the Church of England (Londres, 1851); England and Rome: A Discussion of the Principal Points of Difference (1855) y The Diocesan Synods of the Earlier Church (1878). También obtuvo una reputación duradera como escritor devocional, siendo sus obras: Steps to the Altar: A Manual of Devotions for the Blessed Eucharist (London, 1846); Words to Take with us: A Manual of Daily and Occasional Prayer (1859); The Hour of Prayer, being a Manual of Devotion for the Use of Families and Schools (1873) e Incense for the Altar: A Series of Devotions for... Communicants (1874).
