Edmund Hamilton Sears nació en Sandisfield, Massachusetts, el 6 de abril de 1810 y murió en Weston, Massachusetts, el 14 de enero de 1876.
Edmund Hamilton SearsSe graduó en Union College, 1834 y en Cambridge Divinity School, 1837; fue pastor de sociedades unitarias en Wayland, Massachusetts, 1839-40 y 1847-65, en Lancaster, Massachusetts, 1840-47 y Weston, 1865-76. Aunque relacionado con los unitarios, sostuvo ideas swedenborgianas, profesando a veces su creencia en la absoluta divinidad de Cristo. Escribió extensamente para Monthly Religious Magazine, del que fue editor adjunto, 1859-71. Publicó Regeneration (Boston, 1853), Pictures of the Olden Time (1857), Athanasia, or Foregleams of Inmortality (1858), The Fourth Gospel the Heart of Christ (1872) y Sermons and Songs (1875). Sus escritos destacan por su poder espiritual y belleza; escribió también dos exquisitos himnos de Navidad, "Calm on the Listening ear of night" e "It came upon the midnight clear" (1834 y 1849 o 1850).
