SELBY, THOMAS GUNN (1846-1910)

Thomas Gunn Selby, metodista inglés, nació en New Radford el 5 de junio de 1846 y murió en Bromley el 12 de diciembre de 1910. Su padre era comerciante de seda y lo educó primero en escuelas privadas en Nottingham y Derby, luego en el colegio wesleyano en Richmond, aunque no estudió para graduarse. Fue misionero en Fatshan y Shin Chau Foo en la provincia de Cantón, China, desde 1868 hasta 1881, tras lo cual viajó extensamente por otras provincias. A su regreso a Inglaterra en 1883 sirvió como ministro wesleyano en diferentes lugares. En 1898 se retiró para hacer obra literaria a Bromley. Escribió varios buenos libros sobre China: The Chinaman in his own Stories (Londres, 1895); Chinamen at Home (1900); As the Chinese see us (1901]; también escribió una vida de Cristo en chino, participando en la junta ejecutiva de la Sociedad anti-opio desde 1883 hasta su muerte. Pero es como predicador que ha quedado su recuerdo. Pronunció la conferencia Fernley en Liverpool sobre The Theology of Modern Fiction (1896); contribuyó a las series de Books for Bible Students sobre The Ministry of the Lord Jesus (1896); a Clerical Life, Letters to Ministers (1898) y a The Cross and the Dice-box: Sermons and Addresses to Workingmen (Manchester, 1903); publicó independientemente The God of the Patriarchs. Studies in the Early Scriptures of the Old Testament (1904).
