SMITH, GEORGE (1815-1871)

George Smith, obispo anglicano de Victoria, nació en 1815 y murió en Blackheath, Kent, el 14 de diciembre de 1871.

Era el único hijo de George Smith de Wellington, Somerset. Se matriculó en Magdalen Hall, Oxford, el 17 de diciembre de 1831, graduándose en humanidades en 1837 y obteniendo la maestría en 1843. Fue ordenado diácono en 1839 y sacerdote al año siguiente. En 1841 era titular de Goole, Yorkshire, y en 1844 emprendió una misión de exploración en China para Church Missionary Society. A su regreso publicó los resultados de su expedición con el título A Narrative of the Exploratory Visit to each of the Consular Cities of China and of the Islands of Hong Kong and Chusan (Londres, 1847). Fue consagrado obispo de Victoria en Hong Kong en 1865. Se casó con una hija de Andrew Brandram, rector de Beckenham, Kent, y secretario de la Sociedad Bíblica.

Además de la obra mencionada, Smith fue autor de: Hints for the Times (Londres, 1848); A Letter on the Chinese Version of the Holy Scriptures to the British and Foreign Bible Society (Hong Kong, 1851); Lewchew and the Lewchewans (Londres, 1853); Our National Relations with China (Londres, 1857); Ten Weeks in Japan (Londres, 1861).
