SMITH, GEORGE (1840-1876)

George Smith nació en Chelsea, Inglaterra, el 26 de marzo de 1840 y murió en Alepo, Siria, el 19 de agosto de 1876.

Comenzó como grabador, aprendiendo por sí solo lenguas orientales y destacando por vez primera en 1866 por una contribución al Athenæum de Londres, sobre Tribute of Jehu, en el que mostró sus estudios, llevados a cabo en sus momentos de descanso, sobre las esculturas ninivitas en el Museo Británico. En 1867 ingresó de manera oficial en esa institución y en 1870 fue nombrado ayudante principal de la sección inferior en el departamento de antigüedades egipcias y orientales, estando desde ese tiempo en la primera fila de los asiriólogos. Hizo expediciones a Nínive en 1873 a expensas del Daily Telegraph de Londres y en 1874 y 1875 en favor del Museo Británico, obteniendo inmensos tesoros en escritura cuneiforme.
