John Pye Smith, teólogo no conformista inglés, nació en Sheffield el 25 de mayo de 1774 y murió en Guildford el 5 de febrero de 1851.
John Pye SmithNo tuvo una educación académica, pero era un lector omnívoro en la biblioteca de su padre y en 1796, al terminar su aprendizaje, estudió teología en Rotherdam Academy hasta 1800, cuando fue nombrado tutor residente en Homerton College, Londres. Seis años más tarde fue promovido a una tutoría teológica, que retuvo hasta poco antes de su muerte. Como tutor enseñó sobre Nuevo Testamento, gramática hebrea, lógica, retórica, matemáticas y, en sus últimos años, ciencias. Fue esencialmente un hombre laborioso, versátil y piadoso, más que brillante o profundo, aunque causó impresión en el pensamiento teológico de su tiempo por su Scripture Testimony to the Messiah (2 volúmenes, Londres, 1818-21; una valiosa defensa de la Trinidad contra el unitarismo y Relation between the Holy Scripture and some Parts of Geological Science (1839). Igualmente fue autor, entre otras obras, de The Reasons of the Protestant Religion (Londres, 1815); Four Discourses on the Sacrifice and Priesthood of Jesus Christ, and on Atonement and Redemption (1828); On the Principles of Interpretation as applied to the Prophecies of Holy Scriptures (1830); Scripture and Theology (1830) y la póstuma First Lines of Christian Theology (1854).
