SPALDING, MARTIN JOHN (1810-1872)

Martin John Spalding nació cerca de Lebanon, Kentucky, el 23 de mayo de 1810 y murió en Baltimore, Maryland, el 7 de febrero de 1872.

Se graduó en St. Mary's College, Lebanon, Kentucky, 1826; estudió teología en St. Joseph's Seminary, Bardstown, 1826-30; terminó su curso en Roma, donde fue ordenado sacerdote el 13 de agosto de 1834; fue párroco de la catedral en Bardstown, Kentucky, 1834-1838, 1841-48; presidente de St. Joseph's Theological Seminary, Bardstown, 1838-40; párroco de St. Peter's Church, Lexington, Kentucky, 1840-41; obispo coadjutor de Louisville, Kentucky, 1848-50; obispo en 185O-54; arzobispo de Baltimore desde 1864 hasta su muerte. Fundó The Catholic Advocate, Louisville, en 1835, estando relacionado hasta 1858; The Louisville Guardian en 1858; fue el principal promotor de Catholic Publication Society y Catholic World, ambas en Nueva York.
