STACKHOUSE, THOMAS (1677-1752)

Thomas Stackhouse, teólogo inglés, nació en Witton-le-Wear, en 1677 y murió en Benham el 11 de octubre de 1752.

Era hijo de John Stackhouse († 1734), rector de Boldon, condado de Durham, y tío de John Stackhouse. Estudió en St. John College, Cambridge, siendo director de la escuela de Hexham, 1701-04; fue ordenado sacerdote de la Iglesia anglicana en Londres, 1704, siendo coadjutor de Shepperton en Middlesex; fue ministro de la iglesia inglesa en Ámsterdam desde 1713; coadjutor de Finchley, 1731, y en 1733 fue liberado de una calamidad extrema mediante un nombramiento para el vicariato de Beenham. En 1737, cuando tenía una casa en Theobald Court, Londres, reconoció que le debió a Edmund Gibson, obispo de Londres, 'el actual confortable ocio para el estudio y el generoso apoyo' a sus tareas. En 1741 vivía en Chelsea y sin duda a veces fue no residente y trabajó para los libreros. Con su primera esposa, que murió en 1709, tuvo dos hijos, y de su segunda, Elizabeth Reynell, dos hijos y una hija.

Es recordado por New History of the Holy Bible, from the Beginning of the World to the Establishment of Christianity (2 volúmenes, Londres, 1737), obra con muchas ilustraciones, incluyendo el arca por dentro y por fuera y la torre de Babel. La ilustración de la adivina de Endor fue la pesadilla de infancia de Charles Lamb, que nunca pudo olvidar la pintoresca representación del 'elefante y el camello' asomando por el arca. Las ilustraciones fueron alteradas en ediciones posteriores. Fue también autor de Memoires of the Life, Character, Conduct and Writings of Dr. Francis Atterbury, Late Bishop of Rochester, from his Birth to his Banishment (2ª edición, Londres, 1727); A Complete Body of Divinity... Extracted from the Best Ancient and Modern Writers (1729); A Defence of the Christian Religion from the Several Obiections of Modern Antiscripturists; wherein the literal Sense of the Prophecies contained in the Old Testament, and of the Miracles recorded in the New, is explained and vindicated, in which is included the whole State of the Controversy between Mr. Woolston and his Adversaries (2ª edición, 1733); A New... Exposition of the Apostles' Creed (1747) y The Life of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. With the Lives of the Apostles and Evangelists (1754).
