Calvin Ellis StoweEstudió en la academia en Gorham, Maine, graduándose en Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine, 1824, donde fue bibliotecario e instructor, 1824-25; se graduó en el seminario teológico Andover, Massachusetts, 1828; fue profesor ayudante de literatura sagrada en el seminario Andover así como editor de Boston Recorder, 1828-30; comenzó su carrera como predicador universitario en 1830; fue profesor de latín y griego en Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire, 1831-33; de literatura bíblica, en Lane Theological Seminary, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1833-50; de religión natural y revelada, Bowdoin College, 1850-52; y de literatura sagrada en el seminario teológico Andover, 1852-64. Hizo un viaje por Europa en 1837, investigando los diversos sistemas de instrucción elemental, cuyo resultado incorporó en Report on Elementary Public Instruction in Europe (Harrisburg, 1838). Su esposa fue Harriet Beecher Stowe, autora de "La cabaña del tío Tom". Tradujo la obra de Jahn, History of the Hebrew Commonwealth (Andover, 1828) y la latina de Lowth, Lectures on Hebrew Poetry (1829), ambas con adiciones, escribiendo Introduction to the Criticism and Interpretation of the Bible (volumen i, Cincinnati, 1835) y Origin and History of the Books of the Bible. Pt. 1. New Testament (Hartford, 1867).
