STRYPE, JOHN (1643-1737)

John Strype nació en Houndsditch el 1 de noviembre de 1643 y murió en Hackney el 11 de diciembre de 1737.

Tras pasar por la escuela de St. Paul, entró en Jesus College, Cambridge, 1662, del que fue trasladado a Catherine Hall (licenciatura en humanidades, 1665; máster en humanidades, 1669). Fue hecho coadjutor de Theydon Bois, Essex, y de Low Leyton, Essex, 1669. El arzobispo Tenison le otorgó la sinecura de West Tarring, Sussex, 1711, siendo profesor universitario de Hackney, 1689-1724. Publicó el volumen ii de J. Lightfoot's Works (Londres, 1684); Memorials of... Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury. Wherein the History of the Church and the Reformation of it during the Primacy of the said Archbishop... are greatly illustrated... In three Books, 2 partes (1694); Life of the Learned Sir Thomas Smith (Oxford, 1698); Historical Collections of the Life and Acts of ... J. Aylmer, Lord Bishop of London in the Reign of Queen Elizabeth (Londres, 1701); The Life of the Learned Sir J. Cheke, Kt.,... (1705); su obra más importante Annals of the Reformation and Establishment of Religion and... other Occurrences in the Church of England; during the first twelve Years of Queen Elizabeth's... Reign... With an Appendix, 2 partes (1708-09; una 2ª edición, más completa, 4 volúmenes, 1725-31, Oxford, 1824); The History of the Life and Acts of... Edmund Grindal... Archbishop of... Canterbury, 2 partes (1710); The Life and Acts of Matthew Parker,... Archbishop of Canterbury, 2 partes (1711); The Life and Acts of John Whitgift... Archbishop of Canterbury, 2 partes (1718) y Ecclesiastical Memorials Relating chiefly to Religion, and the Reformation of it, and the Emergencies of the Church of England under King Henry VIII, King Edward VI., and Queen Mary the First (3 volúmenes, 1721). Strype fue un diligente recopilador de materiales, pero le faltó estilo literario y habilidad en el arreglo metódico. Sus obras completas fueron publicadas en Oxford, 1822-40, en 27 volúmenes.
