TOULMIN, JOSHUA (1740-1815)

Joshua Toulmin, unitario y biógrafo inglés, nació en Londres el 11 de mayo de 1740 y murió en Brimingham el 23 de julio de 1815.

Estudió en la escuela de San Pablo, 1748-55 (o 56); se preparó para el ministerio en una academia independiente apoyada por la corporación Coward, 1756-61; fue ministro de la congregación presbiteriana de Colyton, Devonshire, 1761-64; de la capilla bautista Mary Street General,Taunton, 1765-1803 y colega de John Kentish en New Meeting, Birmingham, 1804-15. Fundó la Sociedad unitaria occidental en 1792. Fue un voluminoso escritor, siendo notorio por su obra biográfica histórica.

Publicó: Sermons, principally addressed to Youth (Honiton, 1770); Dissertations on the Internal Evidences and Excellence of Christianity (Londres, 1785); The Practical Efficacy of the Unitarian Doctrine (1796); Sermons (Bath, 1810); Four Discourses on the Nature, Design, Uses, and History of the Ordinance of Baptism (Londres, 1811); An Historical View of the State of the Protestant Dissenters in England (Bath, 1814); las biografías de Fausto Socino (Londres, 1777), J. Biddle (1789), S. M. Savage (1796), Charles Bulkley (¿Londres? 1802) y S. Bourn (Birmingham, 1808) y editó con biografía una nueva edición de la obra de Neal, History of the Puritans (5 volúmenes, Bath, 1793-97).
