Se graduó en Muhlenberg College, Allentown, Pensilvania (licenciatura en 1869) y en el Seminario Teológico Luterano, Filadelfia (1873); fue pastor luterano en Phillipsburg, Pensilvania (1873-78), y también profesor de inglés, lógica e historia en Muhlenberg College (1875-77); pastor en Filadelfia (1878-82); profesor de dogmática y exégesis en el Seminario Teológico Augustana (Luterano Sueco), Rock Island, Ill., (1882-91); profesor de teología dogmática en Rock Island y Chicago (1891-94); y desde 1891 presidente y profesor de teología dogmática en el Seminario Teológico Evangélico Luterano de Chicago. En teología se describe a sí mismo como un 'evangélico luterano, estrictamente confesional y muy conservador'.
