James Edward Cowell Welldon, anglicano, nació en Tunbridge (a 25 kilómetros al sudoeste de Rochester), Kent, el 25 de abril de 1854 y murió en Sevenoaks, Kent, el 17 de junio de 1937.

Fue educado en King College, Cambridge (BA, 1877) y, después de residir en el extranjero durante algunos años, fue ordenadodiácono en 1883 y sacerdote en 1885. Fue elegido miembro de su colegio en 1878; fue maestro de Dulwich College, 1883-85; director de Harrow School, 1885-98; predicador selecto en Cambridge en 1885, 1888 y 1893, y en Oxford en 1886-87; capellán honorario de la reina, 1888-92, y capellán ordinario, 1892-98; conferenciante Hulsean en Cambridge en 1897. En 1898 fue consagrado obispo de Calcuta y metropolitano de la India, pero en 1901 renunció a su sede y fue canónigo de Westminster 1901-06, y desde 1906 deán de Manchester. Además de traducir Politics (Londres, 1883), Rhetoric (1886) y Nicomachean Ethics (1892) de Aristóteles, escribió: Sermons Preached to Harrow Boys (3 series, Londres, 1887- 1903); The Spiritual Life, and Other Sermons (1888); The Future and the Past (1888); Gerald Ever step's Friendship (1895); The Hope of Immortality (1898); The Revelation of the Holy Spirit (1902); The School of Faith (1904); Be Strong. Lessons for Young Lives (1907) y The Gospel in a Great City (1910).
