WESTCOTT, BROOKE FOSS (1825-1901)

Brooke Foss Westcott, obispo anglicano de Durham, nació cerca de Birmingham el 12 de enero de 1825 y murió en The Castle, Bishop Auckland, el 27 de julio de 1901.

Fue educado en Trinity College, Cambridge (licenciatura en humanidades, 1848; miembro del consejo rector, 1849; máster en humanidades, 1851; graduado en teología, 1864; doctor en teología, 1870); en 1851 fue ordenado diácono y presbítero, maestro ayudante de Harrow School (1852-69); capellán examinador para el obispo de Peterborough (1868-83); canónigo residencial (1869-83); rector de Somersham con Pidley y Colne, Hunts (1875-79) y predicador en Oxford (1877-80). En 1870 fue profesor de teología en Cambridge, en 1879 capellán ordinario de la reina; en 1882 miembro del consejo rector de King's College, Cambridge; en 1883 capellán examinador para el arzobispo de Canterbury; en 1884 canónigo de Westminster y en 1890 obispo de Durham. Desde 1881 a 1883 sirvió como miembro de la comisión real sobre tribunales eclesiásticos. También fue miembro del comité de revisión del Nuevo Testamento (1870-81). Fue uno de los más brillantes ejemplos ingleses de erudición y trabajo, siendo notorio por la gran calidad de su obra y por el número de volúmenes que produjo. Pero es recordado especialmente por su producción asociada con Fenton John Anthony Hort de The New Testament in the Original Greek (2 volúmenes, 1881). El rango de sus estudios abarcó también el canon del Nuevo Testamento y contribuciones a la filosofía y obra exegética del más alto nivel. Fue solicitado como conferenciante sobre asuntos de interés nacional, industrial y social y en 1892, casi solo, tuvo éxito en resolver una disputa entre mineros y empleados que amenazaba con colapsar las industrias y transportes del Reino Unido. Fue un valioso colaborador de Dictionary of the Bible (1863) de William Smith y de Dictionary of Christian Biography (1877-87) del mismo editor y Henry Wace.
