Alexander Whyte, Iglesia libre de Escocia, nació en Kirriemuir ( 22 kilómetros al norte de Dundee), Forfarshire, el 13 de enero de 1836 y murió el 6 de enero de 1921.

Se educó en la universidad de Aberdeen (licenciatura, 1862) y en New College, Edimburgo (1862-66); fue ministro adjunto de Free St. John, Glasgow (1866-70); luego ministro asistente y, más tarde (1873), ministro de Free St. George, Edimburgo; y, en 1909, se convirtió en profesor de literatura del Nuevo Testamento y director de New College, Edimburgo.
