HIBBERT, CONFERENCIAS

Conferencias Hibbert es el nombre de unas conferencias públicas que en su momento fueron las más destacadas en Gran Bretaña después de las conferencias Bampton y Boyle. Su nombre procede de Robert Hibbert (1770-1849), unitario inglés, cuyos negocios estuvieron radicados en Jamaica. En 1847 resolvió una escritura transfiriendo a un consejo de administración tras la muerte de su esposa 90.000 dólares en acciones del ferrocarril americano, aplicándose los ingresos en la forma "más propicia para la difusión del cristianismo en su forma más simple e inteligible y para el ilimitado ejercicio del derecho privado de juicio en asuntos de religión." El ingreso del fondo se usaría durante algún tiempo en promover la investigación independiente de estudiantes para el ministerio cuyos logros fueran considerados especialmente brillantes. Sin embargo, en 1878 una parte del fondo se apartó durante una serie limitada de años para el establecimiento de un profesorado que tratara con la historia de las religiones en el mundo. El resultado es un serie de volúmenes que han llegado a ser clásicos en los asuntos que tratan. Muchos de ellos han pasado por varias ediciones.
