HULSEAN, CONFERENCIAS

Conferencias Hulsean es el nombre de una serie de conferencias que reciben su nombre de John Hulse, un clérigo inglés que fue su fundador y por las que es recordado. Nació en Middlewich, Cheshire, Inglaterra, el 15 de marzo de 1708 y murió allí el 14 de diciembre de 1790. Se graduó en Cambridge (1728), siendo ordenado en 1732 y sirviendo como coadjutor en varios lugares pequeños. A la muerte de su padre en 1753 recibió su heredad, retirándose a causa de su mala salud. Mediante su testamento legó una gran parte de su propiedad a la universidad de Cambridge, fundando dos becas, un premio de ensayo y los cargos de Abogado Cristiano y conferenciante Hulsean. Este último, según el testamento, tendría como propósito pronunciar e imprimir veinte sermones cada año sobre las evidencias del cristianismo o sobre dificultades bíblicas. Posteriormente se efectuaron cambios mediante un estatuto, reduciéndose el número de sermones o conferencias exigidas, primero a ocho y luego a cuatro; mientras que el profesorado Hulsean de teología fue sustituido por el oficio de Abogado Cristiano (1860). De los ingresos el ochenta por ciento eran para el sustento del profesorado y el otro veinte por ciento se divide entre el ensayista y el conferenciante.
